The Author
Scott Zamek is not new to traveling the hard way. After years spent exploring wilderness
areas in 35 of the lower 48 states, he trekked and biked his way across the Himalaya,
Karakoram, Pyrenees, Atlas, and countless lesser mountain ranges. As a tour guide at
Kanha Kisli National Park in India, he tracked tigers on elephantback and remains the only
person in history to ride a mountain bike across the length of the park. He recently crossed
the Sahara and Gobi deserts by bicycle, solo camping along the way.
Zamek’s first book, One More Horizon, describes his two-year, 25,000-mile journey
around the world on a mountain bike encompassing 35 countries and four continents. The
book garnered many positive reviews, including five stars and reviewer’s choice in Midwest
Book Review (February 2004), where the book was hailed as a ”powerful and involving
testimonial.” The journey resulted in offers to speak at bike clubs and adventure-travel
groups around the country.
Prior to the book’s release, Bicycle USA magazine published Zamek’s article and
photographs in an issue dedicated to around-the-world bicycle travel. He has also
appeared in the Hindustan Times, Newark Star Ledger, Courier News (Bridgewater),
Daytona Sun Times, and many other U.S. and overseas publications, as well as countless
newsletters and websites related to adventure travel.
Despite an active life, Zamek took some time away from travel to study physics,
mathematics, and chemical engineering on an academic scholarship at Michigan State
University. He has been a member of the National Honor Society, a 26-year member of
the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, and a longtime volunteer for the Midland
Run, a charitable event benefiting the mentally handicapped.
For the past several years, Zamek has explored the state parks and natural areas of New
Jersey, camping, hiking, canoeing, and mountain biking hundreds of trails, rivers, and forests
along the way. He lives and writes in Union, New Jersey and is currently working on book
about China's disappearing wilderness.
